Karen Santos, 2019
I'm a writer, producer, educator, and former actor who makes theater and poetry. I write a column on contemporary performance at The Quarterless Review called Rituals, and my first chapbook, Sky Cracked Open the Proscenium Frame, is forthcoming from DoubleCross Press. The last (in-person) performance I originated was Mrs. X in a deconstruction of Strindberg's monologue, The Stronger, directed by Anna Pettersson at Cutting Ball in San Francisco.
I've written and directed seven original works since 2013 in collaboration with musicians, designers, and performers, in addition to directing scripted plays and interactive workshops for the public. My original performance work has been produced and supported by Theatre Bay Area, Z Space, San Jose Repertory Theater, Hemera Foundation, Body-Mind Centering Association, and Scatterstate Theater, among others. I also research collaborative play-making, and have designed and taught courses in playwriting, creative process, and physical approaches to acting independently and at institutions like American Conservatory Theater, University of Toledo, and as a Director/Dramatist with the San Francisco Opera Guild.
I'm originally from the Bay Area and currently based in Brooklyn.
